지난 30년의 목회를 돌아볼 때 끊임없이 배우고 노력하는 일에 나는 얼마나 자신할 수 있을까? 어느 기자가 빌리 그래함
목사님에게 “젊은 시절로 돌아갈 수 있다면 가장 하고 싶은 일이 무엇이냐?”라고 질문했다. 이에 목사님은 “말씀을 읽고 연구하는 일에 더 많은 시간을 사용하고 싶다”라고
대답했다. 시간이 지날수록, 목회의 연륜이
깊어질수록 말씀을 가까이하고 연마하는 것이 후회를 남기지 않는 목회였음을 깨닫는다.
‘성경이라는 화살’을 ‘상황이라는 과녁’에 명중시키기 위해서는 먼저 폭풍이나 비바람 속에서도 흔들림 없이 날아갈 수 있도록 화살을 갈고 다듬어야 한다. 동시에 한시도 가만히 있지 않는 과녁을 매의 눈으로 놓치지 말아야 한다. 이런 노력과 함께 필요한 것이 먹이를 포착한 사자의 집중력이다. 먹이의 미세한 동작과 숨소리조차 놓치지 않고 전력투구하는 사자의 모습에서
주님의 몸 된 교회를 위해 진액을 쏟는 목회자의 진면목을 보게 된다.
사실 광속으로 움직이는 이 세상에 발을 딛고 있는 성도들을 어떻게 해서든지 말씀의 중력권 속으로 끌어들여
영적으로 무장시키고, 다시 세상으로 보내는 일을 반복하는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니다. 그러면 어떻게 해야 교인들로 하여금 세상과 마주할 때, 세상의 유혹과 고난을 돌파하는 힘을 갖게 할 수 있을까?
먼저 예배를 통해 교인들의 삶이 회복되도록 해야 한다. 그러려면 주일예배가 일주일의 절정이 돼야 한다. 그래야 교회도 살고 교인도 산다. 예배를 위해 끊임없이 배우고 노력하는 것이 목사가 해야 할 최우선의 일이라면,
여기에는 말씀에 몸을 복종시키는 것이 포함돼야 한다.
아무리 말씀을 깊이 풀어낸다고 해도, 가장 곁에 있는 배우자에게 말씀의 모범을 보이지 못하면 목회의 한계를 마주한다. 나는 시간이 지날수록 함께하는 사람들에게 더욱 조심스러워짐을 절감한다. 그들에게 목회자로서
존중받는 것이 쉽지 않지만, 그 문을 통과할 때 비로소 참목회자의 길이 열린다. 흔히 목회자는 골방, 책방, 심방이라는 삼방을 잘하면 된다고 말한다. 그러나 요즘에는 안방을 하나 더 추가해야 한다. 가까운 가족에게 먼저 본이 돼야 하기 때문이다. 이것은 때로 숨 막히도록 힘들지만, 목숨이 다하는 날까지 목회자에게 주어진 운명이다.
성지순례에서 가이드의 역할은 절대적이다. 같은 유적지와 같은 장소를 가지만, 어떤 가이드를 만나느냐에 따라 감동이 천차만별이다. 성지에 대한 영적인 감각을 갖고 남다른 노력으로 끊임없이 공부하는
가이드는 설명하는 언어와 눈빛이 다르다. 목회자도 마찬가지다.
목회 현장은 잔인할 만큼 숨길 수도, 속일 수도 없다. 목사가 성령 안에서 바른 방향으로
끊임없이 노력하고 배우고 있는지는 목회 현장에 하나님의 몸이 건강하게 세워지는지 여부를 통해 확인할 수 있다. 그리고 이 일은 날마다 영적인 절차탁마의 애씀 없이는 이룰 수
없는 일임을 결코 잊어서는 안 된다.

Reflecting on 30 years of my pastoral ministry, I cannot be sure of myself being continuously matured and perfect in learning and endeavoring. A journalist asked Billy Graham what the utmost thing he would do if he has a chance to go back in the time of his young age. Graham replied that he would spend more time on meditating and studying the Word of God. As the time passes by, as my ministry experiences accumulate, I now realize being close with the Word is probably the most regretless pastoral ministry.
In order to strike the target (so called circumstances) with the arrow (so called the Bible) the first thing to do is to sharpen the arrow to fly without swaying in the midst of storming weather. At the same time, we ought not to miss the target that never stand still with our eagle eyes. With all the efforts mentioned above, we need sharp concentration just as a lion seizing a prey. From the aspect of a lion putting the best effort not to miss a minute movement or even a sound of breathing of a prey, we observe a true characteristic of a pastor devoting everything for the body of Christ, the church.
Indeed, continuously carrying on the process of equipping believers with the spiritual armor by drawing them into the gravity of the word of God from the world that changes in a speed of light, and sending them to the world is not an easy job. Then how can they be equipped with the power to make breakthrough to the temptations and adversities that they face in the world?
First of all, there must be a recovery in the lives of believers through the worship. It is crucial for the Sunday worship service be the very core and peak of the week in order to achieve the recovery. Only so, the church and the believers can revive. This includes submitting pastors’ lives under the word of God if it is our utmost duty to continuously learn and endeavor for the worship.
Moreover, even the pastors who have deep biblical insights can face limitations in their ministry when they fail to demonstrate that they live as they teach before their spouses. I recognize myself becoming more careful to those who are close to me. It may not be easy to earn respect as a pastor from them, but if we pass through that door, the true pastoral path will be shown. Often, we say pastors need to be professional in three rooms, that is, prayer room, study room and counseling room. But nowadays, there should be one more room, bedroom, for we ought to be a good example to the closest ones. It may be burdensome but it is our life long destiny.
The role of a tour guide at a pilgrimage is absolutely significant. The quality and the impact of the tour depends on the tour guide. Tour guides whom they constantly put efforts studying the sites with spiritual sensitivity have extraordinary guiding skills. Same principle applies to the pastors.
Pastoral fields are strictly clear and honest. No one can hide nor deceive in pastoral fields. The well being of the body of Christ is a barometer to measure how diligently pastors learn and endeavor in the right direction under the illumination of the Holy Spirit. We should never forget that this cannot be achieved without daily spiritual dedication.
